Dragon Con Parade 2019

The annual Dragon Con Parade, Atlanta's largest parade, begins with a lovely lady playing bagpipes and a full color guard. But, just ahead of that, 'Forrest Gump' runs a stretch of the parade route to chants from the crowds, "Run, Forrest, run!"

The Dragon Con Parade is free to the general public, meaning you can be/see part of Dragon Con even if you're not an official conventioneer. The Parade is a sneak peek at the wide ranging programming and events that take place at Dragon Con.

Cosplay, events, and the parade aside, there are more than 30 tracks packed with programming that conventioneers have access to. Some of my personal favorite tracks are Trek Track (all about Star Trek!), Space, Writers' Track, Science, Puppetry, Film Track, and the American Sci-fi & Fantasy Media Track, to name just a few.

The Dragon Con Parade's Grand Marshal this year was Mark Sheppard! He's had quite the television and film career, my person favorite role being that of Romo Lampkin in the Battlestar Galactica reboot from the late aughts.

You can see that Pikachu was quite excited to see him, too!

Speaking of excited to see, the crowds loved Captain America roaring in on his Harley-Davidson!

I was recently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—my friend Barry was on business travel and I tagged along to play tourist—and visited the Harley-Davidson Museum and got to see the motorcycle that Captain American rode in one of his Marvel films...spectacular!

I had the great pleasure of recently meeting the above Game of Thrones couple through my friend David. They're all members of Cosplay Volunteers of Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that provides cosplayer appearances for children's nonprofit events! What a wonderful and fun way to give back to the community, and I bet the kids just love it!

Walking in a parade is exciting enough, but eating chocolate while walking in a parade...the best! And who doesn't love Lucy and Ethel! If you saw the I Love Lucy episode "Job Switching" (S2,E1), you know the hilarity of Lucy and Ethel getting jobs at a local candy factory.

Atlanta Movie Tours (AMT) was in the Dragon Con Parade for the first time! That's my friend Carrie, founder and owner of AMT, driving one of their vans.

Atlanta Movie Tours started with one tour showcasing film sites from The Walking Dead. They've now grown to 10 different tours and they offer custom tours! You won't believe how many film sites you walk, bike, or drive by every day! And the tours a led by industry professionals, including some former zombies!

I've been on almost all the tours and can personally vouch that they are a great time! They have the best tagline, too... "Get In, Geek Out!"

Speaking of filmed in Atlanta, Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy was in the parade! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was filmed right here in the ATL! If you didn't already know that, you would probably learn it on an Atlanta Movie Tours tour.

Dragon Con is an inclusive organization and event. Everyone is welcome. Except for bullies. That simply will not be tolerated at Dragon Con.

Dragon Con even has a diversity track, its 'Diversity in Speculative Fiction & Literature Fandom" track. Dragon Con believes, and I agree with them, that "understanding that we have similar interests or beliefs can encourage cooperation and cohesion within our community." I love how welcoming to all and how diverse Dragon Con truly is.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is great fun! Did you know that the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is a legally recognized religion in several countries? You'll spot the most devout of pastafarians by the colander on their head, considered religious wear in the noodly religion. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the chief deity in the religion.

The hilarity and exponential number of these T-Rex costumes is astounding! And I can't stop laughing. I don't even know what this type of humor is called, but I love it. They make me laugh and laugh and laugh. #ilovedinosaurs

Spartans | Dragon Con Parade 2019 | Photo: Travis Swann Taylor
Spartans | Dragon Con Parade 2019 | Photo: Travis Swann Taylor

The men and women of Sparta are iconic in the Dragon Con Parade. They've trained for months, all year, for years, and some surely a lifetime to be in Spartan shape. Like many cosplayers, these Spartans spend a lot of time and money creating their costumes, PLUS determined focus and energy preparing their physiques for this event. #GoSparta!!!

Stan the Zombie | Dragon Con Parade 2019 | Photo: Travis Swann Taylor

Listen up ladies and gentlemen. If you don't take care of yourselves like the men and women of Sparta, you could end up looking like my friend here, Stan the Zombie! Then again, Stan the Zombie is a total celebrity.

I have photos with Stan the Zombie at various conventions and even one at a Braves game. He's a great sport! Stan is a pretty awesome living person, too!

Jawas & Sandcrawler Ice Cream Truck | Dragon Con Parade 2019 | Photo: Travis Swann Taylor

Even before you noticed the Sandcrawler on the horizon, you could hear the unmistakable ice cream truck music. When the ice cream pop-wielding Jawas got to us, we were laughing so hard. At least I'll know why I'm craving ice cream when I watch Star Wars again.

Year after year, the walkers in the annual Dragon Con Parade continue to amuse, mesmerize, and entertain in the most unique and clever of ways. "Thank you!" to all who organize, coordinate, volunteer, and walk in the parade!

See you next Labor Day Weekend!

INTERVIEW: Senoia History Museum's Maureen

The Senoia Area Historical Society Museum (Senoia History Museum) is far more than a collection of the usual artifacts and drab placards. This museum is where Senoia history comes alive on the lips of administrators and visitors alike. The Senoia History Museum is all about its wonderful, lively stories! And they're offered with a generous helping of Southern Hospitality.

Founder, Charter Member, and Executive Director of the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum, Maureen Schuyler graciously made time to give me an interview about the museum and to share some of its stories. Museum President Doug Kolbenschlag joined us for the exciting, engaging conversation.

Already a fan of the museum from a previous visit, meeting and talking with Maureen reinforced what I'd suspected...that the Senoia History Museum is a delightfully special destination, one I'll visit again and again. They've grown exponentially since opening their doors in 2010 and are very much engaged with their local community.

Enjoy the interview, coupled with photographs of some of the artifacts found within...

wanderlust ATLANTA: First and foremost, how does one pronounce Senoia?

Maureen: The only correct answer is anyway you’d like. Longtime residents drop the “a” and pronounce it Suh-noy´. Many county residents and some locals pronounce it Suh-no´-ah, while most visitors pronounce it Suh-noy´-a. Actually we don’t know of any other Senoia in the United States so any way you pronounce it, we’re pretty sure you’re referring to our hometown. I stick with Suh-noy´; it’s hard to beat old school. As long-time resident Jane Hutchinson likes to say, “It’s Senoia ~ rhymes with 'boy'”.

wanderlust ATLANTA: Please share with us a little bit about how the museum came to be and how far reaching its collections are. Is there a particular focus?

Maureen: It was always the goal of the charter members of the society to have a permanent location for the collection, preservation and exhibition of Senoia's historical artifacts. To that end, in 1990 the society purchased the historic Carmichael home at 6 Couch Street, which was in disrepair, and spent years restoring it. In 2010, answering the call to establish a proper, functioning history museum, Maureen Schuyler with the guidance of charter member Nancy Roy and a small committee, researched the necessary steps for organization and operation. The museum opened July 2010 and continues to be open every Friday and Saturday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Our mission is to preserve and promote Senoia area's history and all of our artifacts reflect just that ~ the Senoia area.

House in Senoia's Historic District. The house was built by J.A.
McKnight circa 1870 and he was the first resident in this now historic home.]

wanderlust ATLANTA: What's the most significant/important artifact in the collection?

Maureen: The 1827 framed land lottery deeds with leather State seals document the beginning of our heritage story and open up a dialog that can reach many aspects of our museum ~ our Indian presence, the land lottery story itself, and how the area grew from that time on.

the few that had been built with brick.]

wanderlust ATLANTA: What artifact/fact/collection has the strongest Wow! factor?

Maureen: Visitors seem particularly drawn to our two military cases of photos of Senoians who served our country. Our two wedding dresses always impress the ladies. The Riverwood Studios movie projector used for daily screenings during filming always elicits Wow! comments by virtue of its size and because the film industry is such an important part of Senoia’s story. And a new acquisition, the 1912 NCR cash register from Sewell’s General Merchandise Store also makes quite a statement. (Oops, that’s more than one item, but so much of our museum is Wow!)

wanderlust ATLANTA: What's the most unusual/fascinating/weird artifact in the museum?

Maureen: What seems to be a lowly 12-inch ruler has one of the best stories we tell in the museum. Mail carrier Jim Baggarly used the inscribed ruler, and many more, to thank the people along his route when he retired. The inscription (have I tempted you to come and read it for yourself?) speaks to the character of Mr Baggarly - a sweet story of a direct descendant of one of the town’s founding fathers, Rev. Warren Baggarly. The best part of the telling is when someone who has lived here since the 1970s visits and tells us they still have their ruler!

in the mailbox of everyone on the route he ran for 36 years.]

wanderlust ATLANTA: Who are the most fascinating people represented in the museum, with artifacts on display? Who is that person/persons working behind the scenes?

Maureen: In a move that changed the destiny of Senoia, Frank Hollberg was responsible for the Atlanta-Birmingham-Coast (ABC) Railroad coming through and stopping in Senoia. When he learned that the ABC Railroad was planned for this area with a depot in neighboring Fayetteville, he set on a campaign to change the destination to Senoia, changing the very face and fabric of the town. At that time, Senoia had no paved roads and he realized, correctly, that a depot would make Senoia prosperous.

Behind the scenes, throughout our history, would have to be Princess Senoia. Senoyah Heneha, mother of Chief William McIntosh and member of the Wind Clan of the Lower Creeks, is the namesake of our town. In the 1980’s, the historical society commissioned a representative portrait of her by local artist Jo Ellen Macon and that image is our branding and our inspiration.

Not many historical society members know that Kathryn Welden has been a benefactor since the first time she visited the museum in 2011. Ms. Welden grew up in Senoia, now lives in North Atlanta, and still has family living in town. Her financial assistance and her enthusiastic support has helped us move forward in so many ways.

wanderlust ATLANTA: What's been the most challenging episode/struggle/event in the museum's history?

Maureen: Because we are located a few blocks from downtown, we struggle with community and visitor awareness. The Senoia Welcome Center certainly promotes us, we receive press coverage for all our events, we have a Facebook page and a website, but we still hear over and over, “We had no idea you were even here."

Raye collected more than 120 signatures and embroidered each of them over a three year period. One of the names, coincidentally, belonged to her future husband.]

wanderlust ATLANTA: What makes the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum a MUST-SEE for visitors and locals alike? Particularly, why should Atlantans make the drive to visit the museum?

Maureen: I like to think of Senoia as a small town with a lot of history. Our long-time residents help us create the history, our new residents can learn all they need to know about their new hometown, and visitors can experience the rich heritage of one of Georgia’s most charming cities. Our town has lovely shops and excellent restaurants, but if you don’t visit the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum, you’ve missed the story of Senoia – that’s the special part.

grandmother and great grandmother made. The toddler chair, from the early 1900s,

wanderlust ATLANTA: What was Senoia pre-establishment of Georgia? What Indian tribe lived here? Are they represented in the museum?

Maureen: We have a definite presence of Lower Creek Indian history, most documentation supplied by Chief Dode McIntosh, a direct descendant of Chief William McIntosh, one of the chiefs who signed the Treaty of Indian Springs (1825) ceding the land. Chief Dode was the honored guest at a number of events hosted by the historical society in the 1990s.

wanderlust ATLANTA: For visitors who are as impressed as I am with the museum, what can they do to support the efforts of the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum?

Maureen: Membership is an annual vote of support and a way to stay in touch with our progress, and we have various levels of commitment. Donations can always be made in-person, to our post office box, or on-line from our website. We are always interested in acquiring Senoia-area historical artifacts. And of course, just sharing the fact with families and friends that we are here in town, we offer an authentic experience in a historical setting, and we are the friendliest docents you could ever find...that would definitely help us gain awareness.

I originally visited the museum last year, when Dub Pearman was serving as President. His remarkable knowledge of Senoia and the museum, and in particular his hospitality, were significant contributors to me wanting to make a return visit.

When I returned recently, Maureen showed me the same hospitality and I may have never before seen such enthusiasm for a museum as that which is self-evident in Maureen for the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum. We had such a lovely visit. I hope you too have the opportunity to have her as our tour guide when you visit.

On my second visit to Senoia, again for a Big Zombie Tour with Atlanta Movie Tours, I enjoyed a post-tour lunch at Nic and Norman's—owned by Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead) and Greg Nicotero (TWD Executive Producer, Director, Special Effects)—and then went exploring.

I stopped into the Senoia Welcome Center and they, who were very friendly, told me about the Senoia Area Historical Society Museum. I immediately walked there and the rest is history. On this most recent visit, I drove to Senoia just to go to the museum and was there for a splendid two hours talking with Maureen and further exploring the museum.

Of course, afterward, I went into downtown and enjoyed some ice cream, shopping, and people watching before heading back to Atlanta.

The Senoia Area Historical Society Museum is a mere two blocks from the center of Historic Downtown Senoia at 6 Couch Street, Senoia, GA 30276, easily walkable, but they do have a parking area. They're open every Friday and Saturday 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Ask for a guided tour! Now, go, enjoy some wonderful storytelling and Southern Hospitality at the Senoia History Museum!

wanderlust ATLANTA's 2017 Photo Review

Wow! What an eventful year! Let's have a look back...

[Dragon Con Night at Medieval Times]

Usually when I make the time to reflect on the year, I sometimes feel unaccomplished ... until I look back at the photos of everything I did throughout that year. I'm fully reminded that I've been having the time of my life and that I'm fortunate enough to get to do so many amazing and fun things!

Here's a quick list from 2017, some of which I wrote about in wanderlust ATLANTA and some you may be hearing about for the first time:

There's even more and I'm ever grateful for such a fantastic year! I hope you enjoy the photos in this recap and that they encourage you to go out and play in your own backyard (Atlanta). Here we go, in no particular order...

My only previous helicopter ride was over the Grand Canyon. That was awesome, but flying over the city you call home, flying over your actual home, and seeing Atlanta in a whole new way was absolutely fascinating! I highly recommend it! We flew with Select Helicopters.

We met just this week to plan our next year's series. We're so excited! We put a lot of thought and strategy into our 2018 plan. Look for the announcement sometime in January!

I've been going to the Atlanta Botanical Garden since the late 80s and volunteered as a docent for 4.5 years when I moved back this last time. To say that I love the Garden would be an understatement.

This year's summer exhibition "The Curious Garden" was well beyond what I was expecting. I hope you got to see it, but if not, read about it at the above link.

Exciting news! For the Garden's 2018 and 2019 summer exhibition, Imaginary Worlds is returning...bigger than ever! (2013 and 2014)

Most anyone who knows me knows that I'm a big kid at heart. So, it was no surprise that I spent my 2017 birthday at Andretti Indoor Karting & Games in Marietta. Killing zombies, adrenaline-rush laser tag, and driving the fastest karts in Georgia made for an exciting, memorable birthday outing!

This exhibition is absolutely stunning and features thousands of additional blossoms in addition to what is already one of the largest collections of orchids in the United States. If you've not been, please treat yourself this coming year.

"Nobody Loves You" was the smash hit musical at Horizon Theatre this year, which included a run—free to theatre goers—in Piedmont Park on the Promenade. It was the theatre's third, wholly successful, free show in Piedmont Park.

One of the things that I love about Horizon Theatre is that you get to meet and take photos with the stars immediately following the show—even the shows in Piedmont Park. The above photo is following a stage performance of Nobody Loves You with Austin Tijerina and Leslie Bellair.

I've been on most of the tours offered by Atlanta Movie Tours—they're up to 10—and every one has been a fantastic experience! A new tour this year is their Big Zombie Walking Tour (I'm in the photo on that page!), which is amazing! You get to visit numerous film sites including the Chocolate Pudding House, where Carl Grimes ate 112 oz. of chocolate pudding...on that very roof!

Nikki and I went to Eight Sushi Lounge—which was our 8th stop on our "By the Numbers" series—this week to plan next year's restaurant series. We had a great time planning, especially while dining on their Lobster Ramen, the dish that won them the top honors at the Atlanta Ramen Festival this year. This is their second year in a row to win that honor and both of the winning ramen dishes are on the menu!

Dragon Con is one of the BEST celebrity-spotting opportunities in Atlanta! The Dragon Con Parade features a number of celebrities, including this year's Grand Marshal Stan Lee, comic book author and creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Hulk, and many more. Atlanta's Dragon Con Parade is the city's largest parade, one not to be missed!

5Church Atlanta has become one of my favorite dining destinations, in part because they make me feel like family. Yes, they were our fifth stop on our Top 10 Atlanta Restaurants "By the Numbers" series, but since then I've had the great honor of meeting the owner, the executive chef, and their families. I'm so grateful for their friendship.

Since that visit in May, Chef Scotley Innis came on board as the new executive chef. He's AWESOME! And he recently introduced a new menu that will keep you returning to the restaurant again and again. There are a few favorites that remain on the menu, but I'd bet one of the new dishes will become your new favorite!

In late summer, I was invited to be part of a television show featuring 5Church Atlanta. I was super flattered and uber excited! We filmed one evening (the diners, that is; the film crew had been there all day), but couldn't talk about it for months. It was great fun!

While I had no expectations, save a hope to at least see my bald spot from across the room in the televised version. Well, as we all watched at the viewing party at 5Church Atlanta months later, with complimentary champagne, there I was! Six or seven times, in fact!

Watch the Atlanta episode on The Cooking Channel's Late Nite Eats  replaying again later this month!

[Georgia Renaissance Festival 2017]

I'd only been to one Renaissance Festival before, and had been anxious to attend ours! (the other was when I lived in Washington, DC) I think you'll enjoy the Georgia Renaissance Festival with a group of friends, patient and adventurous friends, because there's so much to see and do here!

[Fair Play: The Bobby Jones Story]

Every golf pro or enthusiast knows who Bobby Jones is. The newly renovated "Fair Play: The Bobby Jones Story" exhibition at the Atlanta History Center is magnificent. Even if you've never played golf, I still recommend a visit to this exhibition...it chronicles the magnificent career of a fellow Atlantan!

Bar Margot at the Four Seasons, our fourth stop on our "By the Numbers" series is a special treat for visitors and locals alike. I've been numerous times now and every time is a special occasion, whether I'm celebrating something or not.

[From Crepe Pan to 'Every Excuse to Cook']

I've come to greatly admire Mary Moore, founder of The Cook's Warehouse. It was through Les Dames d'Escoffier International-Atlanta Chapter, of which Mary is a founding member, that I got to know who she is. It was through wanderlust ATLANTA that I got to know The Cook's Warehouse better than ever.

I've shared with Mary on numerous occasions that every visit to The Cook's Warehouse is a discovery of something I didn't know I needed! Mary graciously granted me an interview this year when we discussed the founding of The Cook's Warehouse, a story that begins with the search for a crepe pan.

One visit to Gibbs Gardens and you'll want to go again and again, as I have. I've been to their Japanese Maples ColorFest several years and their Daffodil Festival—featuring 20 million daffodils—is spectacular! They have flower and plant festivals throughout the year.

On our third stop on our Top 10 Atlanta Restaurants "By the Numbers" series, Nikki and I dined at Local Three. Since then, I've heard multiple reports that they have a magnificent brunch, so we'll have to go again. If you go for dinner, I highly recommend the fish dish pictured above...it was one of the best first dishes I've ever had!

[Old Fourth Distillery Tour]

Part of Nikki's birthday celebration in January included a tour of Old Fourth Distillery.

When we arrived, we were the only ones there. By time our tour started, we had a great crowd of fun people, some from out-of-the-country and locals, too. I'm a vodka man and since this visit when I see Old Fourth Distillery vodka on a cocktail menu in a local restaurant, that's exactly what I order.

[Atlanta Movie Tours: Best of Atlanta Tour]

I've been on most of the tours offered by Atlanta Movie Tours, but I'd put off their "Best of Atlanta" tour for years. I finally went this year, with actor friend Jonathan Horne, Suzi Bass Award winner, "Outstanding Lead Actor in a  Play" for The Crucible.

The "Best of Atlanta" tour is outstanding! I was worried that it would be about a lot of shows that I'd never heard of. Evidently I'm a bigger cinema fan than I realized. The tour was totally awesome and great fun!

The second stop on our Top 10 Atlanta Restaurants "By the Numbers" was TWO urban licks. I felt like I was driving through Gotham City to get to the restaurant and the dining experience transported us to another land. The food, atmosphere, and service are outstanding! And meeting Chef Michael Bertozzi was indeed a special occasion. We both highly recommend a visit to TWO urban licks.

Patak Meats is open to the public only one Saturday per month and on the few occasions I make it there, the trip becomes an excursion that includes an afternoon visiting Sweetwater Creek State Park, one of many amazing Georgia State Parks.

The Atlanta History Center has programming for families, individuals, visitors, tourists, and locals alike...all year long! The Fall Folklife Festival is particularly as entertaining as it is educational. I highly recommend adding it to you yearly "things to do" calendar.

Nikki and I launched our Top 10 Atlanta Restaurants "By the Numbers" with a personal favorite, ONE midtown kitchen. We're grateful that it set the perfect tone for our series, and deliciously so. We're excited to be planning another restaurant series for 2018. Thank you, ONE midtown kitchen, for your hospitality!

[INTERVIEW: Topher Payne, "The Santaland Diaries"]

I started this look back at 2017 by sharing with you that I was voted to the Board of Directors at Horizon Theatre this past autumn. One of the things that I've learned is that Horizon doesn't recruit the Board members for someone's name or position, they recruit first and foremost based on a person's love of theatre. I've been dedicated a fan of Horizon Theatre for a number of years, seeing some of their shows multiple times!

I'd met Topher Payne for the first time not too long before he assumed the role of Crumpet for the 19th year of "The Santaland Diaries". He graciously granted me an interview shortly after the run began. We talked on the telephone for half an hour. Well, we mostly laughed—he's hilarious!—and I had a great time getting to know an Atlanta living legend.

THANK YOU and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thank you for joining me for a trip down memory lane of the last year. Thank you so very much for your fanship, for reading my stories, and enjoying my photos. Please feel free to ask a question or share a comment on any of my posts. And please know how grateful I am for your support. I look forward to sharing more of Metro Atlanta with you in 2018!
