Atlanta Blooms! 2018 - 80,000 Tulips and others!

I believe one of the missions of the annual Atlanta Blooms! exhibition at the Atlanta Botanical Garden was to encourage Atlantans to plant more bulbs at their homes and businesses to make Atlanta even more beautiful in spring. They've indeed succeeded in that mission! And the Garden continues to make their own exhibition grow over the years and it's ever more spectacular year after year.

While Atlanta Blooms! is designed to peak over several weeks, Mother Nature has her own timeline, so I highly recommend going very, very soon. I've been a few times already and have seen totally different blossoms on those visits.

My favorite flower in the whole world is the tulip (see the story about my grandmother in previous Atlanta Blooms! posts), so I've taken the liberty to share mostly tulip photos in this particular post. I do hope you enjoy them.

The Garden is exploding with more than 80,000 tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses and other new bulbs added to enhance their ever-growing collection!

Just a reminder that there are multiple dining options while you're visiting the Atlanta Botanical Garden. There's the recently renamed restaurant Longleaf (I recommend reservations, especially for weekend brunch!); the Quick Cafe at the back of Longleaf (sandwiches, salads, etc.); and the Snack Bar, with al fresco seating, in the Perennial Garden near the Great Lawn.

In the Levy Parterre, the Garden has blown it out by adding 5,000 more tulips than in years past. Radiant in oranges and yellows, ‘Sancerre’, ‘Orange Queen’, ‘Orange Emperor’, ‘Maureen’, ‘Big Smile’ and a host of Narcissus are sparkling beautifully!

Have a little fun and discover "Which Bulb are You?" Then share with us in the Comments which one you decide is most like you! I'm sticking with the tulip, although others do have admirable qualities.

Atlanta Blooms! is "scheduled" (remember, Mother Nature has her own plans) March through April, but if you visit before or on April 8, you'll also get to see the annual Orchid Daze exhibition, which is absolutely stunning!

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is one of the few memberships that I've maintained over the years (others I do on alternating years) in large part because of the extensive programming they offer. There's something to see and do throughout the year at the Garden. If you live in or visit Metro Atlanta regularly, I highly recommend considering a membership to our "Oasis in the City"!

For the first time, the new Skyline Garden is a rainbow of spring color thanks to more than 22,000 tulips along the dramatic Flower Walk—be sure to look up and check out that amazing skyline view! Old favorites like the yellow and red ‘Hocus Pocus’ are sharing the limelight with newcomers like the crimson ’Ronaldo’.

When I lived in Washington, D.C., the National Cherry Blossom Festival was "the" sign that spring had arrived. Here in Atlanta we have the Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival and farther south we have Macon, Georgia's International Cherry Blossom Festival, but since I moved back to Atlanta, I've always been excited when the Cherry Blossoms in front of Mershon Hall at the Atlanta Botanical Garden spring forth...for me, that's "the" sign that spring has sprung in Atlanta!

Make your way to the Atlanta Botanical Garden to see this year's spectacular Atlanta Blooms! exhibition at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and hurry...things happen quickly in Atlanta, including our colorfest of spring bulbs!

"Chocolate Covered Weekend" is now! Head over to the Atlanta Botanical Garden for a full two days of chocolate inspired events, learning activities, and tastes.

"Stop by the Edible Garden Outdoor Kitchen where Atlanta chocolatiers and pastry chefs whip up decadent treats or enjoy chocolate games and crafts with the family. Visit the cacao tree where it all begins and discover more about the chocolate making process."

And of course while you're there, check out both of the Dale Chihuly sculptures. This one (photo) is in the Parterre Garden and the other is hanging in the Hardin Visitors Center.

ATLANTApix: Alston Overlook

Alston Overlook
Alston Overlook at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
The Alston Overlook provides a unique view of the Atlanta skyline and one of the most beautiful vistas of the city anywhere in Atlanta. The highest point in the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Alston Overlook provides "a place for both Atlanta residents and visitors to connect with the wonders of nature."

From either of the serenity-evoking bench swings in the Overlook or from other points within this modest space (also used for weddings and private events) one can take in the Parterre Garden, home of the Dale Chihuly-created Levy Parterre, as well as the Midtown skyline to the right and the downtown skyline to the left.

From nowhere else in the Garden is it more evident that the Atlanta Botanical Garden is indeed an "Urban Oasis."

ATLANTApix: Parterre Garden

Parterre Garden - Levy Parterre
Parterre Garden - Levy Parterre
The Levy Parterre, the centerpiece of the Atlanta Botanical Garden located in the Parterre Garden, is nearly as synonymous with the Garden as the Polar Bear is with the World of Coca-Cola or the Whale Shark is with Georgia Aquarium or the Argentinosaurus is with Fernbank. And it's virtually impossible to miss it...and who would want to do that anyway?!

The bright blue Dale Chihuly blown-glass sculpture is a visitor favorite, especially for those who remember the 2004 Chihuly exhibition in the Garden. I like it because it's not only beautiful, it's positioned such that you can get some great photos of it with the Atlanta skyline in the background.

This particular shot shows Mershon Hall in the background, an events space and home of classrooms for Garden members and patrons. The Levy Parterre is also flanked by Day Hall (another event space), the Alston Overlook (the highest point in the Garden), and the Rose Garden.

ATLANTApix: Levy Parterre

Levy Parterre at the Atlanta Botanical Garden
What is a parterre, you ask? In all honesty, before discovering the two currently on display at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, I had never heard the word parterre. If the Fuqua Conservatory or Canopy Walk aren't quite enough the tip the scales of decision toward visiting the Garden, then maybe the Dale Chihuly-created parterres will.

While I love the Nepenthes Chandelier hanging in the atrium of the Hardin Visitor Center (Its bright greenness is actually the wallpaper on my laptop), the Levy Parterre (photo) nestled between the Rose Garden and the Alston Overlook is just as remarkable.

Starting on February 5, 2011, the 2011 annual "Orchid Daze" will feature thousands of blooms coupled with an array of water features in an exhibition titled "Liquid Landscapes." Or if you're looking for a romantic idea for Valentines Day, consider "Valentines in the Garden: Romance Blooms!" on Saturday, February 12, 2011.

ATLANTApix: Levy Parterre at Sunset

As the sun sets on 2010 a lot of exhibits around the city are also coming to a close. But, there's still so much to see and do in Atlanta!

The Levy Parterre at sunset (pictured here) is a sight to behold during any season. And you can get reacquainted with the Atlanta Botanical Garden any time of year with a free, docent-led tour (free with admission, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30 p.m.).

You can stay warm during a visit to the Garden by visiting the tropical or desert houses in the Dorthy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory, which is as exciting today as it was the day it opened in 1989. While you're admiring the exquisite beauty of hundreds of orchids you also can learn about conservation efforts taking place at the Garden!
