Bobby Jones

"Congratulations!" to Adam Scott on winning the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, yesterday!

While the media is covering Scott's win at the Augusta National Golf Club all day, I thought I'd take a moment to share a few golf enthusiast sites to visit here in Atlanta, all of them relative to Atlanta golf legend Bobby Jones.

By the way, for those who did not know, Bobby Jones, with Cifford Roberts, created the Masters Tournament and Bobby worked with Alister MacKenzie to design the Augusta National Golf Club course.

The many faces of Bobby Jones...while golf was his life, his life was much more than golf.

Bobby was born in the L. P. Grant Mansion, located in modern day Historic Grant Park, on March 17, 1902. The home transferred hands a number of times, was even an interest of Margaret Mitchell at one time. Today, the home is the headquarters of the Atlanta Preservation Center.

Bobby has very close ties to East Lake Golf Club, where he used to play. He was at East Lake Golf Club as early as six years old and ultimately won a golfing Grand Slam in 1930 at the Club.

Bobby was laid to rest at Historic Oakland Cemetery having passed away in Atlanta on December 18, 1971.

Visitors to Bobby's grave site often leave golf balls and other golf mementos.  And his grave plot is actually a putting green, with hole and all!

Bobby was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

But, Bobby's Atlanta story doesn't end there—it will very likely go on for as long as humans are playing golf. "Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones" is a permanent exhibit at the Atlanta History Center that chronicles his life and love of the game, very much worth a visit.

So, there's a quick Bobby Jones-centric tour of Atlanta.

Enjoy!

It's totally worth a visit, Terry. I want to go back when everything "greens up" (it was Fall when I went the first time). Tours are every third Sunday...recommend calling ahead.
