Hanson Motor Company: Hanson Six

I once thought the Tucker was among the rarest of automobiles...and it is. Nearly all of the 51 built are still in existence. However, of the approximately 800 Hanson's built, there are only two known to have survived...and one is on display at the Atlanta History Center.

Built in Atlanta in 1920, the Hanson Six at the Atlanta History Center was designed by George Washington Hanson, who moved to Atlanta in 1907. His automobile manufacturing company eventually went under, in 1924, not too long after Ford Motor Company opened a factory here, in 1915, featuring mass production.

Back to the Tucker for a moment. If you've seen the movie "Tucker: The Man and His Dream," you know how gorgeous that car is. I saw one in the late 1980s at a car dealership in Albany, Georgia. Today, the only Tucker in Georgia that I've been able to locate is not on display, but that's not to say it never will be. Fortunately, in the meantime, we have the Georgia-made Hanson Six!

So, bottom line, you don't have to wait for an annual Car Show to see some really phenomenal automobiles in Atlanta. Atlantans love their cars and many of our car clubs have warm weather car shows. Keep an eye out!

There's certainly no shortage of car clubs and car shows in Atlanta. And until we live in a world with all electric cars or 24th Century transporters, I find myself among those who are fascinated with cool old cars and futuristic concept cars.

The hood ornament in the above photo was first introduced in 1955 with the launch of the "Metropolitian" Series III. The Metropolitian was also one of if not the first "compact" cars in the United States...a departure from the "bigger is better" designs of the times.
