ATLANTApix: Dragon*Con Costumes

Dragon*Con Costumes
Dragon*Con Costumes
Costumes, costumes, costumes, and more costumes...one of the most popular attractions of Dragon*Con, taking place now in downtown Atlanta, is the opportunity to score photos with some of one's favorite sci-fi, fantasy, television, and other celebrities (or extremely close approximations by a number of conventioneers) from popular culture, and a few subcultures.

Other photo ops include photographs with the likes of Kate Mulgrew, Tricia Helfer, and Sam Witwer, from Star Trek: Voyager, Battlestar Galactica, and Being Human, respectively.

The 25th Annual Dragon*Con is taking place now in downtown Atlanta through Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2011.

ATLANTApix: The Stormtroopers Are Coming!

Stormtroopers at the Dragon*Con Parade

Talking with a friend at work yesterday about Dragon*Con coming up next week, he told me that he really likes Stormtroopers (photo), so this photo is for him. And it happens to be one of my favorites from last year's Dragon*Con Parade.

Underneath the suit and tie, behind the outgoing tourist, even beyond the wanderlust adventures, practically everyone who knows me knows what a huge sci-fi enthusiast I am. And they know how much I'm looking forward to meeting Kate Mulgrew next weekend.

Come to Downtown Atlanta on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. to see the 10th Annual Dragon*Con Parade...and please say "Hello!" when you see me at the corner of Peachtree and Baker Streets.

The Women of Dragon*Con

The Women of Dragon*Con
The Women of Dragon*Con
Dragon*Con 2011 is fast approaching and many are well into their preparations for the four-day convention. Others are anxiously awaiting the event just for the people watching...or creature watching, alien watching, superhero watching. Whatever the case may be, there will be lots of watching going on.

The costumes are definitely a highlight of the convention. The women of Dragon*Con don costumes that range from the imaginative and tailored to the seductive and provocative (the same can be said of the men of Dragon*Con, but let's focus on the ladies for a moment).

One of my favorite things about Dragon*Con is the enthusiasm the costumed have for having their photo made with other conventioneers and onlookers. Forget the scum and villainy, you'll never find a place with more elegance and sexiness, as well as a healthy dose of good old fashioned fun.

The media doesn't get it just yet...as recent as last year when they were reporting on Dragon*Con they too often used the phrase "geeks and freaks" to describe the attendees. Take another look reporters! Maybe this year you'll catch up with the times and call our conventioneers the obvious "hot and sexy." Keep it up with the insults and one of these scorching hot numbers just might kick some reporter butt...just sayin'.

And just wait until you see the celebrity women who will be attending. The one I am most looking forward to meeting is Kate Mulgrew who played Captain Kathryn Janeway on Startrek: Voyager.

Also attending, and the list is growing weekly, are: Tricia Helfer (Number Six on Battlestar Galactica), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia on Star Wars), Amanda Tapping (from Stargate and Sanctuary), and Meaghan Rath (Sally on Being Human).

ATLANTApix: Kate Mulgrew is Coming to Dragon*Con!

Dragon*Con Parade
Dragon*Con Parade
I learned yesterday that Kate Mulgrew, who portrayed the character Captain Kathryn Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager" for seven years, has confirmed attendance at Dragon*Con 2011. Granted that's nearly nine months away, but many of the tens of thousands of people who attend Dragon*Con every year are already preparing (And I am too, now that I know my favorite sci-fi actor will be there!).

Earlier this year I attended Dragon*Con for the first time (also my first Science Fiction convention ever) and I had the time of my life. Dragon*Con is held over a four day period during the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend (September 2-5, 2011). It is billed as "the largest multi-media, popular culture convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film in the universe!"

One of the main attractions of the convention is the Dragon*Con Parade, which draws children of all ages, fans, and the curious, too. This photo is of some fellow Trekkers from this year's Parade.

People travel from places near and far to attend Dragon*Con...a testament of the fact that Atlanta is a "universal" tourist destination for a wide array of activities and attractions. This city welcomes one and all.
